Requesting agency records in Indiana
Use this process for existing government agency records. Court case copies, vital certificates and criminal-history reports use the separate procedures in the table.
- Who can request
- Any person can request public records under APRA. Follow the agency's current submission procedure and identify records with reasonable particularity.
- How to submit
- Identify the Indiana agency, municipality or county that maintains the record, then use its published records-custodian contact or accepted request channel. Describe existing documents, identifiers and dates. Keep the submitted request and acknowledgement; court copies and vital certificates use the separate services above.
- Response and delivery
- An initial response is generally due within 24 hours for an in-person request or seven days for a mailed or electronic request. Actual production must occur within a reasonable time.
- Fees and estimates
- Inspection is generally free. Copying and authorized special-service charges can apply; ask for the applicable schedule rather than assuming a court document is free.
- If access is denied
- Ask for the exemption and public portions. The Public Access Counselor accepts complaints and provides guidance; court enforcement is a separate remedy.
