What happens when you submit this

If you give us a phone number, or a link to the page, it is suppressed the moment the form goes through. We don't hold it in a queue and we don't review it first — the page stops being served immediately, and the subject is excluded from any page we would otherwise build later.

We look at requests afterwards, not before. The one thing we watch for is someone clearing an accurate but unflattering record — a business line being delisted out of a public complaint record, or a public figure out of a documented one. If that turns out to be what happened, we may reinstate the page, and we log every such decision.

You don't need to know which kind of page it is

We publish pages about phone numbers and pages about people, and behind the scenes they are two different systems. That split is ours, not yours. One form covers both: paste whatever you have — the number, the person's name, or the address of the page — and we work out which it is.

The confirmation tells you what we matched it to. If we read it wrong, you'll see that straight away and can submit it again in a form we'll read correctly, rather than finding out months later that the page is still up.

Why a name alone is slower than a number or a link

Names are shared. There are two well-known David Frankels and two well-known Jonathan Hursts, and we have no way to tell from a name alone which one you mean. If we acted on the name by itself, we would sometimes remove a page about someone who never asked us to — which is the same harm this form exists to undo, pointed at a different person.

So a name gets recorded and a person matches it to the right page. A phone number or a link resolves to exactly one page and needs no interpretation, which is why those are immediate.

Why we don't ask you to prove it's yours

Verifying a phone number would mean sending a code to the line, and asking someone to identify themselves before they can be forgotten defeats the point. A removal we shouldn't have made is reversible. A page we shouldn't have published is not, so we default toward removing.

What we can't do

We can stop serving our own page. We can't remove that number or person from anyone else's site, and we can't clear them from a search engine's index — search engines keep cached copies for a while after a page stops existing, on their own refresh schedule. Most offer their own removal tool if you need it gone faster.
