Who can request

Any person may request records under APRA without ordinarily providing identification or a reason. Use the public body's designated procedure.

How to submit

Identify the Rhode Island agency, municipality or county that maintains the record, then use its published records-custodian contact or accepted request channel. Describe existing documents, identifiers and dates. Keep the submitted request and acknowledgement; court copies and vital certificates use the separate services above.

Response and delivery

The ordinary response period is 10 business days. A written explanation of good cause can extend it by up to 20 additional business days.

Fees and estimates

Standard copies generally cost 15 cents per page; search and retrieval charges have statutory limits and a first-hour allowance. Ask for the estimate.

If access is denied

Appeal to the public body's chief administrative officer, complain to the Attorney General, or seek Superior Court review under the applicable procedure.
